Hey yall, So growing up as a hunter i would be brought to the range and shoot here and there. Now that I've reached the age i can carry a pistol I'm getting curious into the sport of shooting. I have been doing my research and have been trying to find a save for the pistol that i want. Being knew I do not quite know the rules. I've heard that you are only allowed to own a pistol that makes it onto the roster. Is this true? And what about buying out of state? I have been trying to research these answers but haven't been able to fully understand them. So i am just asking if one of you out there could clear things up for me.
Thanks- SS

Mass gun laws are tedious at best. Doing your research on sites such as GOAL, as Jerry W suggested, is a good place to start. You may also want to visit your local firearms dealer and talk with them. Out of state purchases get tricky when buying a handgun. Mass. has 2 lists. One is the state firearms roster, and the other is the AG's list. If a firearm is on the state roster but not on the AG's list, the firearm cannot be sold. Most people in this state find it very difficult to navigate the complex laws regarding gun ownership. Good luck and welcome!

Yea I looked at the goal site before i posted. It is just shocking on how little number of pistol brands are allowed in mass. Iv been researching 1911's and think it is the pistol i want. But saying that the one's I decided are not on the list. To me this is very irritating but its the law. But to clear things up lets say i wanted a kimber or a tauras i can not own either because neither are on the list correct? Thanks for the help guys

My understanding (and I am not a lawyer or firearms dealer, so please correct me if I am wrong) is that you can not purchase either of those firearms new, or used from a dealer in MA. If however you were to find someone who already owns one in MA and is willing to part with it, you would be able to purchase the firearm with a face-to-face transfer in accordance with the state laws regarding private transfers.

You can also buy it from a dealer if it's documented as having been in the state before 1998.
